On whether this is the first time - from the point of view of someone who has been writing code since 1981, my observation is that the job has massively deskilled over time - which in turn has created a huge industry.
ie my generation was about the last one where it was routine for developers to be familiar with assembly code - even if you didn’t code in assembly, you might need to debug compiler problems.
Older generations were critical of both the programming languages modern developers were learning on (BASIC was the JavaScript of it’s time) and also the move towards more informal programming - writing code and then driving the bugs out, rather than spending a lot of time on formal design.
Essentially, the shift from a generation where computer time was a scarce resource, to one who had grown up with personal computers - from software engineers to software developers.
If I was older, I would likely have heard the computer scientists of the 50s complaining about the software engineers of the 70s not understanding the underlying hardware.
So from my perspective, there is a disruptive paradigm shift with each generation, and the trend has always been towards lower technical skill and less formality.
But also - it has always been caused by the previous generation creating the tools that lower the technical requirements.
To be more accurate - a smaller number of tool developers produce tools which disrupt the work of the majority of business focused developers.

I agree with the observations, I am seeing the same in many of my interactions as well. Another group is this: AI PhD’s. Many of them created the thesis for their PhD’s before chat GPT demonstrated the power of transformers and embeddings. They are resistant to change their direction of travel when they should be doing so if they were opened minded and using the best tools available. So so-called AI experts are getting left behind too as they are not using the right tools.
A point that you're not addressing imo is about enterprise-level transformation. That thing is HARD to achieve, and you certainly cannot think of "how would I redesign from scratch with AI in mind" an enterprise that's been operating for 100 years. At the same time, it is in my view unlikely that all those large companies will die anytime soon (let's say, in our lifetime) and will all be replaced by fancy start-ups.
The likely outcome is that a lot of the start-ups will be bought by those large companies.
They might not disappear but they might not set the tone anymore, just like IBM, HP, Cisco, SAP and other huge companies still exist, but it's not where exciting things are happening. They're happening at places like Google. But I wouldn't be surprised if 10 years from now Google or Microsoft are still a big company, but all the cool (and super-profitable) stuff will be happening elsewhere.
This essay, like so many other AI-hype articles out in the wild, still doesn't actually say what AI-first success looks like besides using Cursor. I've used Cursor and Windsurf a bit. I have a friend who tried to build an entire program with it. It quickly got too complex and became more trouble than it was worth, and he ended up building the entire app from the ground up himself.
From what I can tell there are 3 camps:
1. SWEs who don't want to use AI at all
2. SWEs who are recognizing the limitations of vibe coding and reverting *back* to using LLMs as coding assistants, for small, specific tasks
3. Less technical people who claim to be building crazy things with AI and then don't show the code
I would love to see the most complex thing someone has been able to build just with AI, or AI-first and not a lot of review from them. Maybe it's possible. But from what I can tell, most of the good AI code is done in the first round, and then it quickly enshittifies itself because it doesn't actually understand what it's doing.
And please don't throw me in the camp of people who "just haven't used this stuff enough every day", a friend of mine and I were actively working on an AI-first company, we've been using and discussing the tooling constantly.
I think you're confusing AI-first products and vibe coding. You're effectively saying that today it's not possible to vibe code complex things into existence. I agree, of course.
I just read your essay on what you define AI-first companies as, and I think I have an idea of what you mean, but I think you're definition is unclear. You write a lot about what these companies could do or what they should expect or how they think, but relatively little on what they *are*. Even the definition including anti-fragility is how a company responds to change, not what it fundamentally is. Is it fair to say this is a definition:
"An AI-first company is one whose core products and business processes are run by AI, with human actors as direction-setters and output-verifiers" ?
In this case, I think the AI-first company is, to an extent, a vibe-coded company and comes with the same issues as vibe coding. It'll only take you so far. And with the new scaling issues we're seeing with LLMs and inconsistency in repeating tasks, I don't think it's a fair assumption that the AI engine will just get better and better, even if the statement that these companies would benefit from that is true.

But the other issue is different. I define AI-first companies a one enabled by and benefiting from AI progress. It could be a regular Ltd run by regular people. But at its core, the value it creates is a function of the power of AI models it uses. Say, Perplexity is an example: it couldn’t have existed before LLMs and it benefits from LLM progress. It doesn’t mean it’s run by AIs or even that any of its code is vibe coded. I would guess it’s not.
So my main point is that if the value created is a function of AI power, AI-first companies have an incredible advantage over the rest, like Airbnb has an advantage over a hotel: as technology progresses, Airbnb gets stronger without lifting a finger (more people online) but a hotel doesn’t. Similarly, Perplexity has an advantage over, say, Wikipedia, in this regard.
It doesn’t mean that every AI company will win, but overall my bet is on AI-first companies like twenty years ago I would have bet on tech-first companies.
Could it be that AI resistance comes from the fact that it highjacks the core principle of learning. If you learn by doing, struggling, making mistakes, and that this process is wiped by AI. We need to relearn how to learn with AI. And for the moment, I'm still wondering if it is possible.
A parallel, I’m really bad at orientation, I use a GPS daily and often try to conciously remember my way. It has never helped me to improve and I still really suck. Maybe a map and a compass would have?
I’m not sure. I’d say we’re just learning new things with AI. To borrow your analogy, instead of learning how to use a paper map, we learned how to use navigation apps in a sophisticated way. We might now take this skill for granted, but it’s a skill we learned by struggling a bit first.
And with AI, I’m still struggling daily to learn how to make the most out of these new ai tools, struggling, trying, failing and learning in an old-fashioned way.
You lost me on the software dev part. It's a massive oversimplification and generalization. As someone who has spent a lot of time in software development, I feel like I have a unique trait that people who don't make that living don't have... skin in the game. It's easy to make predictions. It's much harder to make predictions and place a substantial bet to go with it. Harder yet to come out ahead with your bets. And often you're up against those whose salary is "hype AI." I have no issue with it, but it becomes more noise to cut through when you're keeping your eyes and ears fully open.
I completely agree, the tools aren’t there yet. It’s still early days. But I imagine what will happen once the tools get materially better, which I think they will.
I imagine high street travel agents aren’t too alarmed by the Internet in late nineties. After all, they did far more than just booking flights and booking tickets over the Internet back then wasn’t easier. But fast forward a few years and we’re all using Kayak, Booking.com and Google Maps for what high street travel shops used to do. I suspect something similar will happen to developers as we know them today.
It’s fine to disagree. But I wanted to add that I do have skin in the game as the founder of a business that trained thousands of software developers in the UK and continues to do so, on top of professional experience building software and CS education. I’m not just reading TechCrunch here :)

I think a lot of developers out there are scratching their heads on how some are getting so much productivity out of it. I think the bottom line for me, is that the tooling isn't there yet. And that is as expected this early. I use the sh** out of AI with my development. Still using the chat bots, because the IDE UX is too frustrating. And the best models still fall down on the most simple tasks. But they are also super useful for some things. It's a lot of work to figure out how to work best with these things. And further, each have their quirks, so I switch between them based on what works best for a given task.
Your point about crypto is wrong, though. Sure it 100x’d in value, but it hasn’t changed the world in any meaningful way. Maybe that will change, but saying that this has already happened and is therefore a mental model for AI undermines your point about AI (which may be right!).
